Have you ever thought about the stuff that goes into your favourite chocolate bar? So ... I was eating a Coffee Crisp the other day (I only like my coffee "crisp" ... really, I can't stand the liquid stuff). If you look at the list of ingredients you may find something that shocks you (or not ... depends on what you expect from a chocolate bar). The main ingredient is ... sugar. WHAT?! Not chocolate or wafer or something? Nope, sugar is followed by chocolate (including more sugar) and the list goes down. Maybe that's why I like it so much ... caffeine and sugar all in one. Mmmm ... caffeine.

So, you may recall a discussion we had earlier about the effectiveness of increased airport security against terrorism, specifically my comment that "You could hijack a plane naked, but you'd make an ass of yourself doing it." (For the record, I have no intention of boarding, let alone attempting the hijack of a plane, naked. I have no intention of hijacking a plane, period.) I was reading the paper today while riding the train, and found an article I'd like to quote for you (from the MetroToday - no alterations to the article required, this is already the "Reader's Digest" version):
Naked passenger forces plane to land
Belgium - An Air France Paris-Oslo flight made an emergency landing in Belgium after a 31-year-old passenger stripped off his clothes and tried to force his way into the cockpit.
The man, a French national of Tunisian origin, was removed from the plane and questioned, but was released without charge.
I think I should modify my statement to "You can attempt to hijakc a plane naked, but you'd make an international ass of yourself doing it."
I rest my case.

Just got home and had a bath after backpacking this weekend ... weather was beautiful, trail was gorgeous. There were lots of bugs too, but I now swear by Deep Woods as a bug repellant :) And of course, there are only a million e-mails to respond to and a kitchen full of dirty dishes still to be done, so I guess I should probably get around to those soon ...
I can't believe the summer is almost over ... whatever will I do?

So ... the news today is that Microsoft and the University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering have forged an agreement whereby the university gets $2.3 million and Microsoft gets to inflict C# and .Net on unsuspecting first year Comp Eng students. There has been much discussion (check Slashdot and the University sites for more information). What has people most up in arms is that it was done without consultation with students (or at least their representatives) or the Dean of Engineering (who is particular about keeping the ownership of the curriculum in the hands of the university). However, that's all I'll say for now - there is a lot of detail that still has not been disclosed and I will be looking to dig up what I can. I assume/hope that the professors and administration aren't so slow as to bind themselves to a curriculum that is detrimental to students, but as many have stated this will set a dangerous precedent for private control on public institutions. Sigh.
